Demi Lovato faces criticism for song choice at cardiovascular disease event

Demi Lovato has found herself at the centre of controversy after delivering a performance of her hit song Heart Attack at a cardiovascular disease event.

The Confident singer performed at the annual Red for Women Red Dress Collection Concert, an event aimed at raising awareness about cardiovascular disease.

However, Lovato surprised attendees by singing her 2013 hit Heart Attack, leaving many observers taken aback.

Fans expressed their concerns on social media, questioning the appropriateness of performing a song associated with heart-related issues in front of survivors, with some describing the choice as "a bit dark."

For the unversed, in 2018, Demi experienced a heart attack and endured three strokes following a nearly fatal overdose. Their recent performance sparked criticism on X (former Twitter), with many expressing their concerns.

One wrote, “Demi Lovato sang WHAT at the American Heart Association’s cardiovascular disease event…..??”

“She didn’t think this one through,” another noted.

The third added, “How many ppl did that song choice decision go through before she performed it live??”

As per accounts, the singer, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them and she/her pronouns, informed the audience that they opted to perform Heart Attack with the intention of "reclaiming" the song.

They had refrained from singing it since their overdose due to the associated trauma.

“While my next song is about the intense feelings that come with falling in love as well as heartbreak, opening yourself up, taking risks and not being afraid to do it again, this song has many parallels for me, my journey and a reminder for all of us in the room just how strong the mind-heart-body connection truly is,” Demi Lovato said.
